Angelica

 Angelica archangelica Good for digestion. Anti-bacterial.

Balm

 Melissa officinalis Tonic herb good for uterine disorders and digestion, prevention of miscarriages, milk production.

Chickweed

 Stellaria media High in copper. Helps digestive disorders, skin complaints, joint inflammations.

Chives

Allium schoenoprasum Internal cleanser and tonic, mild worming treatment.

Cleavers

Galium aparine Rich in minerals especially silica. Tonic and blood purifier palatable to cows, sheep, horses, geese and poultry.

Cornflower

Centaurea cyanus Tonic and digestive aid.

Dandelion

Taraxacum offinicale Good nutritional value with more iron than spinach and more vitamin A than carrots. High in potassium, calcium and magnesium. Blood cleanser, liver tonic. Diuretic and anti-rheumatic.

Dill

Anethum graveolens Aids digestion. Good for colic and increases milk production. Diuretic.

Fennel

Foeniculum vulgare Good for digestion. Expectorant: removing excess mucous from bronchial tubes.

Fenugreek

Trigonella foenum-graecum Seeds have feed value equal to linseed. High in vitamins, nitrates, calcium and phosphorus. Expectorant and appetite stimulating. Increases milk production. Blood purifier.

Garlic

Allium sativum Anti-bacterial and viral effects. Helps prevent worms in sheep and goats. Expectorant. Excellent for respiratory disorders. Sulphureous, cleansing the blood and repelling insects.

Lady's mantle

   Alchemilla vulgaris High tannin content, tonic and blood fortifier.

Marigold

Calendula officinalis Anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal. Flowers said to calm fretting animals. Beneficial for skin conditions. Cleanses the blood and aids digestion. Contains vitamin A and sulphur.

Marjoram

 Origanum vulgare Anti-inflammatory and carminative. Aids digestion and is a good tonic and blood purifier.  Prevents tissue degeneration and arrests bleeding in wounds. Helps nervous system (sedative).

Mustard

Brassica nigra Promotes appetite and helps expel worms.

Nettles

Urtica urens,  
Urtica dioica
Nutritious leafy vegetable (cut for fodder or made into hay) rich in iron, lime, sodium, chlorophyll, protein and vitamin C. Cleanses the blood and stimulates the blood flow. Prevents worms. Diuretic. Coat-conditioner.

Parsley

Petroselinum crispum Diuretic, expectorant and anti-rheumatic.Rich in iron, copper and vitamin C. Stimulates appetite and increases milk. Reputedly prevents footrot.

Pennyroyal

Mentha pulegium Especially important for cows as aftercalving stimulant and restorative.

Peppermint

Mentha piperita Anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and decongestant. Stimulates blood flow and expels parasites. Good for colic, indigestion and flatulency by goats.

Poppy, red

Papaver rhoeas Pain relieving and expectorant. Calms nervous horses. Seeds are particularly valued by Arabs as horse tonic. All parts of plant are medicinal.

Purslane

Portulaca oleacea Blood cleanser and digestive aid. Mild vermifuge.

Rosemary

Rosmarinus officinalis Anti-inflammatory ,-bacterial, -fungal and -rhematic. Cleanses blood and stimulates circulation. Nerve tonic and carminative.

Sage

Salvia officinalis Astringent and carminative. Increases milk yield, aids digestive and nervous systems. Excellent for mouth ulcers. Fever reducing.

Sainfoin

Onobrychis spp. High tannin content can alleviate bloat.

Sorrel

Rumex acetosa,
Rumex acetosella
High in potash, enjoyed by most stock.

Sow thistle

Sonchus arvensis Mineral rich, antiseptic and fever reducing.

Tansy

Chrysanthemum vulgare Worm expellant and general tonic. Leaves may help prevent abortion.

Thyme

Thymus serpyllum Expectorant, astringent, carminative and vermifuge. Relieves cough. Good for inflammation of mucous membranes, pneumonia and inflammation of placenta. Milk tonic for sheep and goats. 

Woodruff

Galium odoratum  Increases milk yield.

Wormwood

Artemisia absinthium Carminative and anti-inflammatory. Aids digestion and stimulates appetite. Vermifuge for horses, cows and sheep.

Yarrow

Achillea millefolium Anti-inflammatory, -rheumatic, astringent and diuretic. Acts directly on the bone marrow and stimulates blood renewal. Promotes healing of wounds and ruptured blood vessels. Helpful for colic and flatulence. Reduces fever.
